After the G'Quan was primed, I painted the primary colors. I wanted a more subtle pattern so I used Testors Insignia Red mixed with a little Gunship Grey (about 1 part grey to 3 parts red). The primary color for the center sections I used Gunship Grey.

After this step, I will pencil in the pattern I'm going to paint being very careful not to scrape the paint with the pencil lead. For the pattern, I used Burnt Umber and you can see that I've already started to paint the pattern on the crossbars.

I looked at some reference to make the pattern as accurate as possible but in areas where I couldn't see, I just made it up. The colored band where the insignia is I mixed some Interior Blue-Green (Modern Russian Military) and some Cobalt Blue to match the reference I had. The main hull of the ship has a border which you can somewhat see in the above picture and is painted Gunship Grey after all the detail is done.

After the pattern is done, I will use a brush with a very sharp point and paint thin white lines around each of the Burnt Umber painted sections. Note: this is a pain in the ass but worth it when it's done. Since I'm using a thinner based paint, if I make a mistake I can easily fix it by gently brushing with a brush dampened with thinner.

The very last thing I do is glue on the crossbars and touch up the seam.

Below is a picture of a finished G'Quan.

Looking carefully at the reference, I noticed the to main Battle Lasers (in the front) are painted red all the way back to the rib closest to the center of the ship and that the detail in the center of that rib is a blue-grey color. Also note the four bands around the engines are painted red as well as per my reference.
