Ships Of The Rag Tag Fleet

Colonial Movers Freighter

Before the Cylon attack, Colonial Movers was the largest moving company in the colonies. Their low cost freighters and recognizable "We Move Anywhere" slogan were a familiar sight. After the destruction of the colonies, these were among the first vessels able to escape and meet up with the Galactica and have demonstrated their durability time and again.

The Colonial Movers Freighter is one of the most memorable ships in the Battlestar Galactica series. We see one of these vessels near the Galactica in a lot of establishing shots and we also see one in some other shots of the fleet implying there is more than just one in the fleet. This ship was also seen fairly early in the monage of ships escaping the colonies which implies they were one of the first to be able to escape. Special thanks to Jim Creveling who built the model pictured above (I hope you don't mind!).

Livestock Ship

The Livestock ship is a common sight on the spacelanes. Transporting Bovas from one colony to another, these ships offer plenty of space for the animals to graze as well as specialized acceleration pens when taking off or landing from a planetary surface.
The versatility of the design also turned the ship into the workhorse of material processing companies. Capable of carrying a large quantity of ore or other substances, many were modified to carry a wide variety of different things.

The modelmaker that made this ship says it is a livestock ship in a magazine article though it is implied in Saga of a Star World that it is an mineral ship. I've changed my opinion and I'm going to go with the livestock ship designation but the SCS will work for either.

Gemini Freighter

The Gemini Freight Company operated some of the largest freighters in the colonies but also operated some of the oldest. Designed for long distance hauling, these freighters are lightly armed for protection against pirates or the stray Cylon patrol.

The Gemini Freighter is another well established vessel in the show and seems to have some of the worst living conditions in the fleet. In Galactica 1980, the gemini was armed and put up a fight during a Cylon attack though it was ultimately destroyed. It is unknown if it had been armed all along or had been given upgrades since it left the Colonies.

Rising Star

The pride of the numerous Trans Stellar Liners, the Rising Star was the most luxurious liner operating within the Colonies. The cruise line operated many such liners that were the most pleasurable way to go from one colony to another as well as one of the quickest. It's atmospheric capability made the ship extremely convenient by being capable of landing at an airdrome where it can load and unload passengers directly without need of shuttles.

The Rising Star is well established in the series though there is little information about the Trans Stellar Cruise Line.

Agrocultural Ship

Since fresh food would typically spoil as it traveled from one colony to another, the agro ships provided one of the only fresh sources of certain fruits and vegetables that could not grow on many colonies. These vessels consisted of little more than vast greenhouses and accompanying life support systems, so they were very fragile despite their large size. This fragile nature meant they could not perform even moderate manoevers without putting a strain on the struts holding the ship together.

The Agro Ships are well established in the series and we know there were four of them in the fleet at one time though two of them were later destroyed by a Cylon attack. The scenes showing the ship comes from the movie Silent Running and in that movie the ship is called the Valley Forge.

Foundry Ship

This ship and many like it keep the fleet operational by refining ores and manufacturing various parts and components constantly needed by the ships in the fleet. Prior to the Cylon attack, these ships were typically found near asteroid mining operations or working alongside Mineral ships.

There is little known about this ship except that it is part of the fleet and present in the background of many establishing shots.

Prison Barge

At one time a starliner, this ship has since been converted into a prison barge carrying prisoners to and from the various incarceration centers around the colonies. After the destruction of the Colonies several of these ships escaped and joined the fleet, one of them remain a prison barge holding those that continue engaging in criminal activities in the fleet.

This ship is a prison barge in the show but there is no information as to whether this ship was intentionally designed to be used that way.
